The song
Richard Lusby sat down to write a love song for his wife. As the verses came, he found he was describing a love that reached further than the two of them: the same love he holds for the Savior, and the love that was given to the world on the first Christmas. The song he finished is about both at once, because to him they are not two different things.
It came fast. The melody kept ringing in his ear through the night; he would go to bed, wake, get up and write a little more, then go back to bed and wake again. The words and the music arrived together, and the whole song was written in twenty-four hours.
Charlotte recorded it in Utah in the autumn of 2026, with the vocal kept close and simple so the words carry. Three and a half minutes, built for a candlelight service, a car ride to grandma's, or the quiet after everyone has gone to bed.
Shepherds kneeling down,
angels all around,
worshipping the newborn King.
On a quiet night like this
the first Christmas gift was born.Chorus · words and music by Richard Lusby
Full lyrics
On a quiet night like this
Mary gave a tender kiss
To her newborn baby boy
Who would fill the world with joy
On a quiet night like this
The first Christmas gift
The King of kings was born
Jesus Christ our Lord
Shepherds kneeling down
Angels all around
Worshipping the newborn King
On a quiet night like this
The first Christmas gift was born
On a quiet night like this
I gave my heart to His
Unworthy as I am
I do the best I can
On a quiet night like this
The first Christmas gift
The Father gave His Son
Bringing hope to everyone
Shepherds kneeling down
Angels all around
Worshipping the newborn King
On a quiet night like this
The first Christmas gift was born
Unto you is born this day
A Savior to light your way
